Every week a business owner asks us some version of: “I’ve got maybe $1,000 a month for marketing. SEO or Google Ads?”
Both camps will happily take your money and argue their side. Here’s the answer we give when it’s our own money on the line.
The one-sentence version
Google Ads buys leads this month. SEO builds an asset that produces leads for years. A business that needs revenue now starts with ads; a business that wants to stop renting its customers finishes with SEO. Most should run a phased mix.
What Google Ads actually delivers
You bid on searches like “emergency plumber abbotsford” and pay per click. In the Fraser Valley market right now, expect:
- $5–$50 per click for local service keywords (we’ve seen “seo chilliwack” clicks priced at $48, yes, marketing keywords are the worst)
- Leads within days of launching
- Instant off-switch: pause the budget, leads stop the same day
That last point is the whole trade-off. Ads are a tap, not a well. The day you stop paying, you disappear. Costs also creep up as competitors enter the auction, you’re renting attention in a market where rent only goes up.
Ads win when: you’re new with no rankings, you need cash flow now, you’re testing a new service or city, or a seasonal window (think Chilliwack rafting season) is too short for SEO to catch.
What local SEO actually delivers
Local SEO is the work of becoming the business Google shows for free: Google Business Profile optimization, reviews, local pages, citations, technical health.
- Meaningful movement in 60–90 days, top-3 Map Pack contention for most service niches in ~6 months
- Roughly two out of three clicks on a local search go to the free results, the Map Pack and organic listings, not the ads above them
- Compounding: the reviews, pages and authority you build this year keep ranking next year
SEO wins when: you can invest before you need the return, your market searches consistently year-round, and you want a moat, because once you hold the top 3, a competitor can’t outbid you into it.
The math, side by side
Take a $800/month budget in a trade niche over 12 months:
| Google Ads only | Local SEO only | |
|---|---|---|
| Month 1–2 | 10–20 leads/mo | ~0 new leads |
| Month 3–6 | 10–20 leads/mo | 5–15/mo and climbing |
| Month 7–12 | 10–20 leads/mo (CPC creeping) | 15–40+/mo from Maps + organic |
| Month 13, budget paused | 0 leads | Rankings keep producing |
| Asset owned at end | Nothing | Reviews, rankings, content, authority |
The sequence we actually recommend
- Month 1: fix lead capture first. Neither channel matters if calls go to voicemail. Missed-call text-back and an AI receptionist make every later dollar work harder, this is why it’s the base layer of every Shaxx plan.
- Months 1–6: ads for cash flow, SEO in parallel. Let ads pay the bills while the SEO compounds underneath.
- Months 6+: shift budget from ads to SEO as free rankings replace paid clicks. Keep a small ads budget for the highest-intent emergency keywords where being in both places doubles your SERP real estate.
The mistake that wastes the most money
Sending paid clicks to a slow, generic homepage. A $20 click that lands on a 6-second-loading template page is a $20 donation to Google. Whatever channel you pick, the landing page decides the ROI, it’s why we hand-code ours to hit 100 PageSpeed.
Bottom line
- Need leads in two weeks? Ads, with a proper landing page and automated follow-up.
- Building for next year? SEO, starting now, because every month you wait, a competitor banks the compounding.
- Doing it right? Both, phased, with lead capture fixed first.
